How the Giraffe Got its Neck - Tall Stories

Tall Stories merge Kipling and Darwin with a big bit of silliness

Choosing a Fringe show can be a pot luck affair. So it’s nice to know that year after year, Tall Stories can be relied upon to come up with the goods. The team behind The Gruffalo and The Snow Dragon are back with a new show that fuses physical storytelling, puppetry, new music and a great deal of silliness. Inspired by the stories of Rudyard Kipling and the research of Charles Darwin, How the Giraffe Got its Neck follows two intrepid explorers on a journey of discovery. Namely to find out how the eponymous animal ended up with such a high head.

All of which sounds vaguely educational, but as far as director Olivia Jacobs is concerned, learning something new is merely a by-product of having fun. ‘The most important thing about the show is that it’s a good story, well told and well staged,’ she says. ‘If our audience learns anything about evolution en route, that’s brilliant. When I go to the theatre I want to walk out buzzing; I don’t mind whether I’ve learned anything, as long as I’ve felt something and been carried away. I hope that audiences leave our shows feeling all of that and a bit more.’
