Company History and What We Do

The List is an independent limited company based in Scotland founded, in October 1985, by Robin Hodge who remains the Publisher. The List's aim was to publicise and promote the wide range of arts, events and entertainment taking place throughout the year in Scotland through publication of The List, a general interest magazine of quality in Scotland. The company continues to follow its original aim and now undertakes broad publishing activities for the resident including an award winning website www.list.co.uk, and for the eating and drinking sector, the Edinburgh festivals, Scottish students and music events. The List also serves the visitor, with The Midgie which is found in over 100 hostels and other outlets across Scotland and through its work with Visit Scotland. The List is a member of the Periodical Publishers Association (PPA).

Circulation

Readership of the The List and www.list.co.uk varies over the year and is linked to the major events and cycles in the Scottish arts and entertainment scene but is now (April 2009) over 500,000 a month. The List is a member of the Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC).

Content

All events listings are published free of charge and are accompanied by informative, independent critical comment offering a guide to readers as to what is worth seeing and why. Articles and features are also included previewing forthcoming events in greater detail.

Further publishing activities

Throughout the year The List also publishes a number of special issues to support major arts events and festivals in both Glasgow and Edinburgh. These include T in the Park, the Edinburgh International Festival and Fringe, the Edinburgh International Film Festival, The Edinburgh International Book Festival, Gig on the Green and Glasgow and Edinburgh Hogmanay. It also publishes a series of major guides such as the Eating &amp Drinking Guide: the Larder, a guide to Scotland's food and drink; an annual Student Guide and the Bar Guide.

Digital activities

Our website www.list.co.uk has comprehensive listings of arts and entertainments across Scotland, and well beyond the distribution of The List in print. Cities covered include Dundee, Aberdeen, Stirling and Inverness. It offers readers the fastest and simplest service for planning cultural and entertainment activities. It offers independent views on events and gives users the opportunity to publish comments and feedback on performances and on cultural and local news items. The site is geared to deliver an increasing breadth of information, such a extensive video coverage of the 2008 Edinburgh Festivals in collaboration with edfest.tv. In addition to www.list.co.uk we have websites alongside our visitor title, The Midgie www.themidgie.com and food title, The Larder www.thelarder.net.

The LIST Card

The List has launched a dining promotion scheme aligned with its other food,eating and drinking sector activities. It provides promotional opportunities to restaurants and the chance to eat on a 2 for 1 introductory basis to card holders. See www.list.co.uk/card.

Research and Information Services

Beyond the day-to-day publishing, The List is also the official supplier of information about events in all parts of Scotland to VisitScotland for publication online and in print. It also supplies regional information on a contract basis to a number of other major clients.

Employees

The List has a permanent staff of c. 30 people and also uses the services of around 30 freelancers.
